What is a Depository?

Comparable to a bank, Depositories hold securities such as shares, bonds, debentures, government securities, mutual funds, etc., for investors in electronic (dematerialised) form.

There are two main SEBI registered depositories in India: National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) and Central Depository Securities Ltd. (CDSL). To avail of depository services, an individual must approach a Depository Participant (DP) that is registered under either NSDL or CDSL.

Geojit is a DP of both NSDL & CDSL, and provides depository services such as maintaining your demat account, dematerialisation, rematerialisation, pledging, trade settlement, transfers, etc.
