Why is Muhurat Trading Conducted on Diwali?

Diwali marks the beginning of a new Samvat year. Many investors believe it is auspicious to start the new Samvat year with an investment. Accordingly, stock exchanges provide a platform for investors to participate through Muhurat Trading. Muhurat Trading was first introduced by BSE in 1957 and by NSE in 1992.

How Does Muhurat Trading Work?

Trading during the Muhurat session takes place in the same manner as regular market trading. Investors can trade eligible securities such as shares, currency derivatives, commodity derivatives, and other approved instruments.

However, participating in Muhurat Trading does not guarantee profits or higher returns. Investment decisions should always be based on individual financial goals, risk appetite, and market conditions.

What Can You Trade During Muhurat Trading?

Investors can trade eligible securities during the Muhurat session, including:

  • Equity shares
  • Equity derivatives
  • Currency derivatives
  • Commodity derivatives
  • Exchange-traded funds (ETFs)

Can I Buy Mutual Funds During the Muhurat Session?

You may be able to place a mutual fund order online during the Muhurat Trading session. However, Muhurat Trading does not significantly impact mutual fund investors because mutual funds are not purchased at the live market price prevailing during the session.

Mutual fund units are allotted based on the applicable Net Asset Value (NAV), subject to the scheme's cut-off timings and fund realisation rules. Therefore, the Muhurat session itself does not offer any special pricing advantage for mutual fund investments.
